Getting Film School Scholarships

The prospects of a person aspiring for a career in film is almost like that of the fox reaching for grapes on a high vine, very difficult. An education in film is not cheap, it is not easily affordable because it is a specialized degree that the students receive. At least $100,000 is the budget required for a three-year or four-year bachelor’s degree and even more for a master’s degree. This makes film school scholarships a must for any student.

To give you a hint of the cost, the one year immersion program offered by the Los Angeles Film School costs $35,000. You can get programs from the state-funded University of California which cost less but the fact is these programs are difficult to get into. Every year there are only 310 seats for the freshman class which makes it very competitive.

The less privileged students who otherwise deserve to get into these schools are helped by the film school scholarships. Even these can be as precious and elusive as an Oscar award. In the other industries students get scholarships from most companies which would allocate financial aids to students. These students are later on employed with those companies. However, there is no such facility for the film industry as there are no such film school scholarships.

And any one with some experience in the industry knows that finances are not the end of the story for ensuring success in film industry. Many students feel they have “great talents” but ultimately the ones who make to the coveted Bachelor’s degree are the people who have “true great talent”. At the entry level itself the students have to prove themselves through completing application forms, a series of interviews, submission of extensive work samples. Finally those who can present impressive portfolios will probably get these highly coveted film school scholarships.

Students can take the benefit from small amounts of grants that can help them in the spending. The cost of supplies for the start up projects for film or video students can vary from $200 to $2,000 depending on the course requirements. That’s over and above the costs of books, facilities etc., However, you can always help yourself by using your daddy’s camcorder and must realize that saving every penny helps you add to your film school scholarships.

The basic reason for shortage of film school scholarships is the exorbitant cost of just one week at film school, which is almost $10,000. That is the reason the students are advised to find other means to seek film school scholarships. The quantum of such amounts is immaterial because you will know your exact requirements. The students can also try for the financial supports that are granted for assistant teachers.

There is no need to get worried, however, with the incessant expansion of the film industry, newer opportunities will open up. Talent and creativeness can get a student film school scholarships but only a strong will can help him or her achieve their dream of making it big in the film industry.
